MASOOR DAL DOSA

MASOOR DAL DOSA

I tried this recipe in which we make dosas using masoor dal and raw rice for the first time recently.
Masoor Dal or Red Lentil, the principal ingredient here, is said to have high amounts of protein and fibres that are good for us.

You can make the dosas wafer thin or like the ordinary dosa, as per your choice. Both turn out to be very tasty. My thanks go out to my friend, Asha Radhakrishna Shenoy for sharing this recipe.

Ingredients:

  • Masoor Dal, 2 cups ( see picture above)
  • Raw Rice, 1 cup
  • Methi Seeds, 1 tsp
  • Dry Red Chillies, 3-4 or as per taste (optional)
  • Salt, to taste
  • Oil, for making dosas
Method:

Wash and soak raw rice and methi seeds for 2-3 hours
Wash and soak masoor dal seperately for 2-3 hours.
If you are using dry red chillies, first grind them in a mixer till they are crushed
To this, add the soaked masoor dal and grind
Next add the soaked raw rice and methi seeds. Grind both to a smooth paste, using the required amount of water to get a batter of the regular dosa batter consistency
Add salt as required and ferment the batter for 10-12 hours or overnight.
To make the dosa:  Heat the tawa ( griddle.) Sprinkle a few drops of water. When the water sizzles, the tawa is ready for use.
Pour a ladleful of the batter on the tawa.
Spread this quickly using the ladle.
Move outwards from the centre using a continuous spiral motion till the dosa measures about 6 ".
Pour a teaspoon of oil around it.
Cook for a couple of minutes till it becomes crisp at the edges
Flip and do the same for the other side.
Serve hot with chutney of your choice
